Children are our future at the InnerCity Mission School

Building lives…

Tuesday 25th July marked the success of the InnerCity Mission School’s graduation. Many esteemed partners were in attendance for the Valedictory Ceremony, sending a clear message to the students that their future was of the utmost importance to them. Assistant Secretary-General Pastor Afolabi Oketunji, Gospel legend Deacon Buchi and many more graced the School with their presence. The InnerCity Mission School is a ministry of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome set up to improve the lives of poor and vulnerable children. It is a direct platform through which these children receive free and quality education, free textbooks and notebooks, and most importantly free daily meals: breakfast, lunch and take-home dinner. Pastor Chris founded the InnerCity Mission School as a direct response to the alarming UNICEF survey that reported “57 million children Primary School age are not in school, half of these are in Sub-Saharan Africa”. The School also features a special academic program called the B.R.I.D.G.E. program, which supports the average “late-starter” by facilitating a seamless re-integration for drop-outs.

Changing the world…

The InnerCity Mission School’s main MO is to take the divine presence of God to the deprived, excluded and vulnerable children throughout the inner cities of the world; giving them a hope and future through innovative teaching and learning. Over 150 alumni of the InnerCity Mission School – dating as far back as 6 years – were present at the graduation ceremony, proving the life changing impact and long lasting effects of the BRIDGE program. It was a very special day featuring many exciting events such as: spoken word performances, a ceremonial handover of leadership positions, a special dance presentation from the graduating pupils, alumni exhortations, and the presentation of awards and prizes. The pride and joy was written all over the parents’ faces as their children walked up to receive their certificates. Many were grateful for the incredible milestone completed; an academic journey otherwise impossible without the contribution of the InnerCity Mission partners.

What next?

The graduates’ special dance presentation chose the appropriate Israel Strong song ‘Bigger Than Yesterday’ to symbolize their evolution to greater heights. The climax of the graduation was the blessings spoken on the graduates’ lives as Pastor Omoh Alabi declared uncommon exploits in their future. Furthermore, Pastor Sam Zakka and GEMs in Christ Embassy Maiduguri sponsored Rhapsody Bibles gifted to the pupils. The InnerCity Mission School integrates Christian values with quality innovative teaching and learning; educating each child to excel both spiritually and mentally whilst equipping them with the social skills necessary for growth into responsible, self-reliant adults who become beneficial to society. A former pupil’s testimony proves the magnitude of the work InnerCity Mission School conducts: “The InnerCity Mission School has helped me and my family a great deal…When I came, I did not know how to read, write or even speak good English” now she can do all three!
